Online College Courses

A college degree is a must in today's challenging job market. But not everyone can afford to leave right after high school and live it up for four years in a college in a dorm room. Some people have to work full time and some people go later than others. Many of these students choose online college courses because attending classes online makes getting a degree so much easier. It takes the guesswork out of your schedule.

What are online college courses?

Online college courses are classes taken for college credit via the Internet. Usually you buy the book and all of the study materials then watch a lecture online through streaming video or read notes written by the professor. Your tests can either be taken online or can be mailed to you and then returned via the post. Your study time and class time is your own so you can schedule your biology class on your lunch break, right when you wake up, or even right before you go to bed.

The flexibility of scheduling is really what draws most people to online college courses. It must be said though that online college courses are not for the undisciplined student. You have to make sure that you are always on schedule, slack off for a week and you will spend much more time on that class work you should have completed the first time around, which defeats the purpose of having a flexible schedule. It is important that you think of it as a real class with the same classroom settings and rules.
You will need a computer, obviously, and high speed internet helps. High speed internet really is a must, otherwise, if you are trying to watch a lecture online and your dial up speed can't keep up, you might miss parts of the lecture (or more likely get frustrated with the length of time it takes to download lectures and course material).

It is also advisable that you have an actual "class space" or study space. This is the area you go to for class. You do nothing else in the space except "attend" your class and study. Associations are very important for good study habits. That's why a lot of people say you should never study in bed or on the couch. It is a little too easy to lie down for just a second and fall asleep, or to flip on the television and forego your nightly study session for the latest movie on TNT.

Online college courses offered and their possibilities

Online college courses are varied but don't include classes where you would actually need the classroom or lab setting such as math or science class though some can include an online lecture and then a classroom lab. From sociology to history to art, any class where you have heavy reading could be offered online.

Liberal arts, religion, nursing, engineering, criminal justice, education, finance and computer science are all degrees that can be earned by taking online college courses. You need to find an institution offering your degree plan and classes that will fit your busy schedule and contact the college for more information.
